Dot Tel Domains - New Display Features

By Bill Rutherfurd

The new Dot Tel Domain display is a significant change for this top level extension. The new display will be released in March, 2010. I am somewhat positive about the new display design. However, it seems to have drawn its inspiration from Tax Department forms; especially those of New Zealand, a country South-East of Australia.

Telnic is the promoter of Dot Tel. Their timing with the new design is excellent. It was no doubt planned for the month before the domain's first year renewals which are due on 24th March, 2010. The display changes are dramatic, and welcomed. They are the shot in the arm that this internet top level domain extension needed. I mean, who got any pleasure out of showing anyone their Dot Tel with the current display?

Colour customisation will be offered through a series of templates. I do not know the details yet of those templates. The components of the design appear to be square, whereas the old design was curved. I liked the shape of the previous design. It was the drab colour scheme that was the problem. I am ambivalent on colour customisation because I do not know if it will detract from the Dot Tel brand. I favour just one template with a fantastic design to keep the brand strong and recognisable.

Strong and colourful borders are better. Although colours increase the data amount per page, data costs are falling. Perhaps in time, as data costs drop the display will evolve into something that people really love to see.

The Tel logo will be moved to the bottom of the page. This is a shame because it completed the text header for the current web site page. The current design also put the logo right in the user's face when they pulled up the page. It now has a semi-tube or lens-like design. I preferred the previous Tel logo for its simplicity and I think that the change was not required. It will also affect brand recognition as it will sit below the fold of the page on many computers and mobile phones. Perhaps, the logo position will be adjustable.

The VCard is now at the top right of the page. This an improvement because it makes this important feature more accessible, or noticeable than when it was at the bottom right of the page.

Custom icons have been allowed for popular web sites such as LinkedIn, and Facebook. This is an improvement because well known and colourful symbols can now be placed on a Dot Tel page making the page more exciting. The previous display lacked this excitement factor.

The placing of well-known icons on the page improves the perceived quality of that page because they are some of the best known symbols in the world. They give a web page status whether that status is deserved or not. This is a major improvement which adds value to all Dot Tel Domains. There are also new contact type icons.

One thing missing from the new display is the breadcrumb trail that is on the current display. Studies of usability indicate that the breadcrumb is an indispensable part of a web page. I hope this is an error because it is a significant mistake to remove it. It could be at the very top left of the page on the same line as the new management tools. I hope they do not leave it out!

There are two new features which are critical. One is absolutely necessary and that is a way to search the current Dot Tel or all Dot Tels. Top marks here! The other addition is the top-of-the-page management and login functions. If I am not mistaken, this means that the previously roundabout route to managing a domain is gone. Excellent stuff and in the correct position, as is the search box.

Telnic are also introducing Google AdSense on Dot Tels which will be greatly appreciated by owners. It will provide another income stream for Dot Tel owners, and add credibility to the domain extension. Hopefully, it will not involve any third party applications. This is another step in the right direction.

Telnic at long last have done some things right. There are still things to improve. After being available to the public for nearly a year, there are at last grounds for cautious optimism about the future of Dot Tel.

Bill Rutherfurd is an early Dot Tel adopter. He likes the fast access to contact data and information especially on mobile phones. It is also a very cheap web presence. The "Info-Memo Cloud", Or: How To Survive With "Your Virtual Swiss Army Knife"

Overview:

About information and .tel domains

The picture:
On one side, we have Internet, that provides us with all availabel information about nearly everything. You just got to surf, and give in some good terms and keywords into the search engine.
Thats great. But how do I use all the information, and how will I find it again? Bookmarking? Good idea. Helps to find websites and pages again. But what, if you can not use your laptop or PC, and would be glad to get access to websites and pages, that you have market to review again?
Here is a good solution. It sounds nearly too simple, and does not really look like a great idea. But it is. If you would like to put info together, about one issue, subject, project, etc., you could get a .tel domain, only for that use.
And on that .tel domain, you could create a system of folders with subfolders, where you put a lot of website links.
I figured out, that if you where on the go with a big screen smart phone, you could go to your special .tel, and look up some specific website (without searching or googling before), and even use emails or phone numbers from those websites, emailing and phoning on the go.
My message is, that you can do all tasks from your smart phone (iPhone, for example, or later, also smart book, which is a smaller mini laptop).
Again: Our thinktanking is about: „From information to usage of information, with .tel“.
Example:
A person wants to settle (or relocate) in a (new) city.
There are about 20 to 30 useful websites with informaion he finds interesting and perhaps useful, to fullfil his task of settling in the city (finding a apartment, installing, administration, integration, job, free time, activeties, food and shelter, social organisations, etc.).
The next step would be, to create a mind map, with all these website names, and sub branches/sub domains/links going to more specific and useful information.
At the end, you draw your own individual info-map. Where you can bypass all other info, that is less important for achieving your goal and task directly, within reasonable time.
After you have pointed out, which info is most important for you, on your mind map, you can apply that info structure to a folder tree system within your .tel domain.
The result is, that you have all the info that you need, and that is availabe, all on one contact point. Once that is set up, you neither would have to google nor surf. Only go direct to what is of use for you. I think, this, one would have to try out, in real, not only in theory, and see how well this works. Try to use it, only where you can get free WiFi. And find out, how you can save the most mobile phone and mobile internet costs. By using free public WiFi, there will be no mobile Internet costs for you.
I have read about availabel flats/apartments, or houses going to a new tenant or owner preety fast. Some deals are indeed good, and first come, first serve, and maybe first get.
I believe many deals have been possible, because searchers where using their mobile phone ability, also. Beeing a few hours, or a day ahead of others to know about a new offer, may decide about to have, or not to have something. (I think, today, as apartments and houses are so expensive, it is often the better solution to look for housing to renovate, and then go from there, and renovate bit by bit, and you either have a cheap monthly rent, or where able to buy it for a affordable price. So often, looking for any apartment seems to be a non go, and a big waste of time. So, you might want to save time and money for searching, and invest it later, when you have found a apartment or house for renovating. - Use your .tel!... For searching, or looking for (natural) building materials.
Today, you could use a .tel, or many .tel's for so many things and tasks, and save a lot of time and money. For one reason, because you sorted out important information from unimportant information, etc., and got that important information, or the informative webpages, respectiely the links to it, stored on your .tel, and can look it up, and use it, anytime on the go.
Maybe a bit like carrying a Swiss Army Knife in your pocket, having all tools you need, and any tool you need, for any task. Anytime, on the go. Never lost. Always a solution. Always a tool. Always hope. Able to achieve tasks. Able to move on. Able to get jobs done. Able to be creative and productive.

Errr... - Here is the picture:

It might be your new surviving tool...

- Have some fun, as well!...

.tel Plugin for Confixx

Administrate the .tel-domains directly via Confixx.

1. order tel-domains directly via Confixx
2. administrate tel-domains via Confixx
3. adjust the contents of the tel-domains directly via
the Confixx interface

The .tel-interface of the TELNIC has been critized regulary
in the past. It is known as being complicated and leads to
many queries – especially among technically less versed users.

Minimize your support now and maximize acceptance
of the .tel-domain by use of a self-explanatory interface:
Input is given via a calling card-template – a straight forward
input mask everybody is able to work with.

Via your administrator-access you simply activate this plugin
for every reseller.

Following the order of the domain the reseller
enters the .tel-domain within Confixx, such that the user
can adjust it himself. In order to automatize this process,
you can use the Confixx automatization API.
